Searching for the Extraordinary
In 2019 Patrick Rand was a Fulbright Scholar in Finland, teaching and carrying out research for six months at Aalto University in Dipoli, near Helsinki. This brief presentation summarizes his observations of the Finnish culture and explores how Finnish design and craft continues to be a model for how we should design our buildings and cities. The presentation may remind attendees of their own past experiences in Finland and may offer suggestions of things to see on their next trip there.
Patrick Rand is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Architecture in the College of Design at NC State University. Since joining the faculty in 1977, he has taught architectural design studios, architectural construction systems courses, and graduate seminars regarding architectural detailing and innovative materials. His focus is on the relationship between design and building technologies. He has enjoyed teaching remarkable students who bring intelligence and ambition to every project that they engage.
Patrick’s expertise spans a wide range of architectural materials and construction systems. Patrick has co-authored six books, all of which address how architectural design is enhanced by thoughtful use of construction materials. His books have been critically acclaimed and have been published internationally in English, French, Chinese, and Korean.
